- Why Specialise in Hernia?
- Why a Specialist Hernia Centre?

By concentrating the work performed in hernia repair, this specialist centre is able to constantly increase its expertise in the field and develop improved techniques based on a wealth of highly focused experience. With cases added to by the thousand each year, this enables the centre to offer the finest treatment possible in all hernia cases.

The Royal College of Surgeons has stated:

"The important message... is that outcome is dependent on the application of a standard technique by well trained and skilled operators.

The best results are achieved in units devoted to hernia surgery."

The British Hernia Centre is the first such specialist centre and has proven the above declaration to be absolutely correct. Indeed, The British Hernia Centre now performs more of these operations than any specialist unit in the world.

What about 'complex' cases?

The unparalleled level of experience achieved by the surgeons at the Centre, means that they often repair hernias that have been rejected elsewhere. A throughput of cases such as this, each year, inevitably include a large number of all types of complex cases. This invaluable experience is passed on to all patients, however simple or complex the case.

Academic Prominence.

The British Hernia Centre has produced one of the largest-ever studies based upon the results of a single hernia procedure performed at one centre in this country. The paper, written for The Annals of The Royal College of Surgeons, reports on the operative and post-operative results in more than one thousand patients.

In its unique position as the largest centre specialising in this kind of hernia repair anywhere in the world, the British Hernia Centre has been able to accumulate, not only an extraordinary level of experience in hernia repair, but also a wealth of material for academic studies of all kinds of hernia repair, from the most common 'simple' hernias to the most complex cases.

Following the results of that thousand cases, the Centre went on to study the outcome of another thousand - and yet another.
(A later paper, based upon over 3,000 cases was published by the Journal of the American College of Surgeons)

The post-operative recovery times (measured in days) of each successive thousand cases were then compared with each other.

The outcome was very clear. As good as the results were to start with, even these were steadily improved upon by continuous, concentrated specialisation in this approach to hernia surgery at the British Hernia Centre.

This is graphic proof of the benefits of specialisation in hernia - a field which has, for too long, been rather overlooked.

Teaching

The British Hernia Centre holds teaching seminars and symposia for the medical profession all over the UK to report back on our advances in the field of hernia.

The Centre also hosts international conferences on hernia, participates in discussion with specialist hernia units in different parts of the world to assist in the advance of surgical techniques in this field.
