The assessment that up to 19% of recurrent hernias re-recur probably underestimates the problem, while it is likely that the risk of repeated recurrence increases with each subsequent repair. Recurrence rates of over 30% have been reported even by surgeons with a special interest in hernia repair.

The data presented here are from one particular study, a consecutive series of recurrent hernias seen at one institution and operated on by specialist surgeons.

We favour a preperitoneal technique for recurrent groin hernias
